Five Reasons to Start a Blog on Your School’s Website

I’ve been blogging now for just over a year.

When I first started I really didn’t know what I was doing. I just jumped in and started writing.

My goal was to try to write a blog post once a week. And, for the most part, I have been able to keep up with that pace.

What’s remarkable about blogging is that people, like you, actually read what I have to say. Thank you! When I first started, no one even knew that I had a blog. Now, people actually open up the email, read the post on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, or read it when it is shared from someone else.

I now have exposure that only a blog can bring to me. It provides a platform for me to share content that school leaders, admissions directors and marketing directors are interested in reading.

And you know what’s really cool? Every time I write a new blog post, the traffic to my website more than doubles on that day. Did you catch that? My Enrollment Catalyst website receives over 50% more traffic on a day that I blog. (This means that I should blog more!)

Why am I sharing this with you?

I believe that blogging is one of the most effective marketing strategies for your school. It is essential. Schools that have blogs will have the advantage in their marketing efforts.

However, I am surprised how few schools are using this strategy.

I want to share with you five reasons why you should start a blog on your school’s website:

1. A blog will provide an opportunity for you to share dynamic content on the Web. Just think, you have the opportunity to publish anything you want about your school, or anything related to education, on the Web and on your website. A blog is one of the today’s best content marketing tools.

2. A blog will increase traffic to your website. In HubSpot’s research, they found that a blog will increase visitors to your website by 55%. This is exactly what I found to be true.

3. A blog will provide significant search engine optimization (SEO) value for your school and school’s website. You can strategically focus on creating keyword rich content through your blog posts.

4. A blog will give you a platform for your school to share some content of value to your community and to the world. While you might be tempted to use your blog for self-promotion, don’t. Your blog should focus on content and stories that are useful for your internal and external community.

5. It’s fun. That’s right, blogging can be fun especially if you like to write and tell stories. And, if you don’t, I am sure that there is at least one person at your school that can!

So, if you haven’t already included blogging in your school’s marketing strategy, you need to do it. This is one key strategy that you don’t want to leave out of the mix this year.
